THE ECB still has big concerns about the Irish banks – including the viability of nationalised lenders – according to a letter from Mario Draghi (inset) to Fianna Fail's Michael McGrath.

Several outstanding issues remain to be addressed in the Irish banking system, the head of the European Central Bank warned. These include tackling bad loans and driving through reforms and restructuring.

"Resolving these issues will be crucial in order to ensure the emergence of a sound banking sector that will support the domestic economy in the coming years," Mr Draghi wrote.
