Irish army applicant fined over assault

A YOUNG applicant for the Irish army who beat up a passerby in a drunken episode near his home has been convicted and fined €400.

Gerard Hand (18) had been told he can avoid a criminal record for assaulting the man if he paid €200 compensation.

Dublin District Court heard he had only saved part of the sum. Judge Michael Coghlan refused to further adjourn the case.

Hand, of Dorset Street, admitted assault, breach of the peace and public drunkenness. The incident happened at Dorset Street on February 20 last.

Hand was among a group of men who were drinking and causing a nuisance.

Gardai saw him punch a man once in the head. He threw the victim to the ground and hit him again.
