THE Teeling whiskey company is set to open a new distillery and visitors' centre in the heart of Dublin's Liberties. The company will base itself in Newmarket Square near St Patrick's Cathedral, an area with historic links to more than 40 previous distilleries.

The €10m Teeling Whiskey Distillery will start production in the fourth quarter of the year, with the visitor centre opening in early 2015.

The distillery will create 30 jobs and aims to provide the export as well as the domestic markets. It will also see 50 jobs created in the construction phase. Founder Jack Teeling (inset) said his family's vision is to revive the old distilling tradition in Dublin.

"We are proud to be returning to our ancestral distilling roots which trace back to 1782 in The Liberties," he said.

Mr Teeling said a new generation was now discovering Irish whiskey, which could signal an up-trend for the product.
