Veteran media executive Murdoch MacLennan has been appointed non-executive chairman of Independent News & Media (INM).

He replaces Leslie Buckley, who stood down this month after five years in the role.

INM, which publishes Ireland's leading newspapers including the Herald and the Sunday World, announced the appointment yesterday ahead of annual results which will be published tomorrow.

Mr MacLennan is deputy chairman of Britain's Telegraph Media Group (TMG), having been its chief executive officer for 13 years.

Before joining TMG, he was group managing director of Associated Newspapers, and before that managing director of the Daily Record and the Sunday Mail.

He also chairs the Press Association Group and the Scottish Professional Football League.

He has been a member of the council of Google's Digital News Initiative since 2016.

Mr MacLennan was one of four new directors elected to the INM board last Thursday.

The other three directors are Fionnuala Duggan, a media executive; John Bateson, MD of INM shareholder Dermot Desmond's IIU; and Seamus Taaffe, a retired KPMG partner.
