A TRUCK driver has been jailed for five years for importing €600,000 worth of cannabis.
David Mathews (27) was seen by gardai driving off the ferry at Dublin Port and transporting the drugs to his Monaghan home where two men met him and took the cannabis to Northern Ireland.
They were stopped after they crossed the border by the PSNI and each later jailed for six years.
Mathews of Drumgola, Rockcorry, Co Monaghan, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to the importation of 49kg of cannabis worth €608,400 on November 7, 2009.
He said he agreed to the job to pay off his Credit Union loans of €15,000.
Gran fires back at gun robber
A US grandmother foiled a robbery attempt by two armed men by getting into a shootout with them, wounding one man.
Lulu Campbell (57) had just dropped off her grandson in Georgia when someone demanded money outside her car, threatening to shoot her.
Store owner Campbell, who is always armed, said the man fired at her and missed. She fired back, striking him in the chest. The other man fled.
Ruling due on DSK maid case
A New York City judge is expected to rule by the end of the week on whether to throw out a hotel maid's lawsuit claiming that Dominique Strauss-Kahn sexually assaulted her.
In her civil case, the woman says Strauss-Kahn tried to rape her in his Manhattan hotel suite last May.
The former International Monetary Fund leader has denied doing anything violent in their encounter. Prosecutors dropped related criminal charges last summer.
Seacrest stays on as Idol host
Ryan Seacrest is sticking around as host of American Idol.
He has hosted the hit singing show on the Fox network since its premiere a decade ago. No details were revealed about his salary or the length of his new contract.
Seacrest called the show's run until now "a wild ride".
