In brief: Troops rescue baseball star

Wilson Ramos, the 24-year-old Venezuelan catcher for the Washington Nationals baseball team, has been rescued in central Venezuela two days after being kidnapped.

Venezuelan commando units found Ramos unharmed in a rural area of Carabobo state and arrested three people.

President Hugo Chavez mounted an aerial operation for the rescue. The case highlighted the country's crime problem where murders have almost quadrupled since 1999.

Black Sabbath -- they're back!

Heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath are to record their first new album with the original line-up for 33 years.

The 1968 incarnation of the band, fronted by Ozzy Osbourne, will record new material with legendary producer Rick Rubin and play the 10th Download festival next summer.

The Birmingham rockers will return to the Donington Park festival in England next June, before embarking on a worldwide tour.

Turks take out ferry hijacker

Turkish commandos have stormed a hijacked ferry and shot dead the lone hijacker.

Transport minister Habib Soluk said none of the 18 passengers or crew members were hurt during the raid.

Governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu of Istanbul province said that "I can say that he was a member of the terrorist organisation," referring to the Kurdish rebel group, the Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK. Bomb experts were trying to verify whether any explosives were attached, as the hijacker claimed.

Family curb on 'beating' judge

A Texas family law judge seen beating his older daughter in a video she posted on YouTube is having visits with his younger daughter limited.

The limits on Aransas County Court-at-Law Judge William Adams include an order not to take his 10-year-old daughter from her mother, disparage her mother or drink within 24 hours of seeing his child.

Another judge issued the temporary restraining order after Adams' ex-wife filed an affidavit claiming there was conflict after their 2007 divorce.
