In Brief: Titanic ticket sold for €43k

AN auction house has sold an original ticket to the 1912 launch of the Titanic and a dinner menu from the ship.

On the block at Bonhams in New York were various Titanic remnants offered to mark the centennial of its sinking.

The historic admission ticket fetched €43,000. The menu, touting choices like the tongue of a castrated rooster and beef sirloin with horseradish, sold for €23,000.

Both went to private American buyers.

Madge tribute to punk Patti

Chart queen Madonna has revealed an unlikely musical inspiration -- punk poet Patti Smith.

The singer has named Smith's recording of Gloria as one of her key influences.

Despite her background in the New York dance scene as she began her career she went for the reworking of the track written by Van Morrison and originally recorded by his band Them in 1964.

She chose the lyric and song after being invited to give her choice as part of HMV's "my inspiration" campaign .

Lock of Collins' hair up for sale

Huge interest is mounting over the sale this week of a lock of hair belonging to Michael Collins.

Rare footage of the Corkman heading on the Anglo Irish Treaty delegation in 1921 is also going under the hammer .

But Adams, on St Stephen's Green, Dublin, says much of the interest is on the lock of hair -- a keepsake once belonging to older sister Kitty.
