In Brief: Jail term is cut for car dealer

A CAR dealer jailed for four years for failing to pay over €220,000 VAT on second hand vehicles, had his sentence halved in the Court of Criminal Appeal.

John Hughes (55) previously with an address in Cula Road, Bray, Co Wicklow, has pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to sample counts of failing to pay VAT on dates between July 2003 and February 2006.

Yesterday the Court of Criminal Appeal cut his sentence to two years. Hughes had repaid the tax of €226,718 which was due on 119 cars.

The court ruled the sentencing judge made an error by discounting largely or entirely the large settlement Hughes made with Revenue and the destructive effects on his finances, his capacity to earn and his family.
