In Brief: Homeless teen assaulted girl

A HOMELESS youth who sexually assaulted a 12-year-old girl after her family took him in when "no one wanted him" was given a three-month suspended sentence.

The 18-year-old had pleaded guilty at the Children's Court earlier to sexual assault of the girl at her home in Dublin on a date in 2009. Judge John O'Neill suspended the sentence on condition the teen does not re-offend within 12 months.

The youth, who recently tried to kill himself, was placed on supervised probation for one year and registered as a sex offender.

Traveller camp 'on lockdown'

Women on Dale Farm in England threw what could be their final party while others watched television, making the most of electricity before they were evicted.

Resident Kathleen McCarthy said that come morning the site would be on lockdown.

She said they would not go until physically forced to.
