In Brief: Garda's €27k for nose break

A 32-year-old former garda, whose nose was broken by a man he had taken into custody, has been awarded €27,400 in the High Court.

Julian Shanagher told a Garda Compensation hearing that in May 2009, he had been patrolling with a colleague in Portlaoise when they came across a public order incident involving youths.

Mr Shanagher, of Kingston Lawn, Ballinteer, Dundrum, Dublin, said one youth who had been arrested and handcuffed was "very agitated".

As Garda Shanagher tried to calm the arrested man at the garda station, the youth butted him in the face.
