In Brief: Boy (13) on drug charge

A CANNABIS possession charge has been brought against a 13-year-old boy already facing motor theft allegations.

The boy had been charged earlier with stealing a car in north Co Dublin on March 16 and allowing himself to be carried in a stolen car on March 27.

His bail had been revoked by the Dublin Children's Court and it was ordered that he was to stay in a detention centre for four weeks to allow psychological, psychiatric and behavioural assessments of him to be completed.

Yesterday another summons against the boy alleged unlawful possession of cannabis herb last September -- when he was 12. Judge Bryan Smyth adjourned the new case for directions from the DPP.

More help for Voice hopefuls

Contestants on The Voice will get a little help from friends including Paloma Faith and Cerys Matthews when they join the talent show later this month.

Faith will team up with Danny O'Donoghue to help mentor his acts on the BBC1 show and Matthews, who shot to fame as lead singer of Catatonia, will join forces with Tom Jones.

Scissor Sisters singer Ana Matronic will help out Jessie J and will.i.am will be joined by his long-term collaborator Dante Santiago.

France in new terror swoops

Ten people suspected of ties to radical Islamist websites have been arrested in raids across France.

It is the second time in several days that police have conducted sweeps. They come after a killing spree in south-western France by a young French Muslim radical.

An official said the latest arrests are not connected to the Toulouse killings .

US gays fight benefits battle

A lawyer for gay married couples has argued that a law that denies them a host of US federal benefits given to heterosexual couples amounts to "across-the-board disrespect".

The 1996 Defence of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, is being challenged in two cases before the First US Circuit Court of Appeals.
