FOURTH generation jeweller Paul Brereton opened in Grafton Street just one year ago, and is "delighted" he did.

Brereton's moved their store from nearby Chatham Street, where they spent 35 years, when they saw an opportunity after West jewellers closed.

A refurbishment followed, restoring the 300- year-old building to its former glory.

"It has been just phenomenal," said Paul. "It has been unbelievably busy."

John Brereton Jewellers has been a Dublin staple since 1916, but it's the first time the jewellery family has had a store on Dublin's most prestigious shopping street.

Recession

"We got word that West's was up for sale. We spent a year doing a massive job on this building," he said.

He believes we are now in a third stage since the recession started: before it, people spent freely, then they looked for the cheapest on on offer and now "they're looking for the best product at the best price", he said. They have been very busy since they opened the new store with customers seeking good products at a good price.

Tourists

"We've also got a lot of tourists in here, American, Chinese, Germans, from cruise ships in Dublin Port," he said.

"They seem to say to them – when you go into Dublin, go to Grafton Street. They also want to buy from an Irish company," Mr Brereton added.

When people come into the store to buy rings, bracelets or necklaces, they also have expertise on which precious stones to choose, as he is a gemnologist.

He welcomes the upgrade of Grafton Street streetscape, which has already started.

"The paving was very tired looking. It needs to be done. It's never a good time to do it but all businesses will benefit from it," he said.

"Grafton Street, after, all, is considered one of the best streets in Europe."
