GOLF star Rory McIlroy dumped fiancee Caroline Wozniacki by phone and promptly issued a press release, she has claimed.
Tennis star Caroline said she couldn't believe how she was told their relationship was over.
"I was shocked. I thought at least I would get a face-to-face or something but there was nothing, just a phone call and I did not hear from him again," the tennis ace has revealed.
She says she found the break up "very hard because he made it very public from the start. He put out a press release and all that so I didn't have a choice. It just got thrown in my face."
The 24-year-old described how she was with McIlroy earlier that day before he rang and for the first five minutes of the break-up phone call she thought it was a joke.
"You can't prepare yourself or your body for something like that. I don't think you expect to be in a situation like that," she added.
Caroline confessed she went through "a bit of a shock phase for a while". But she now sees the whole episode as a chapter in her life from which "I definitely learned about myself. It's taught me a lot about relationships".
"You just have to take life as it goes. I believe you never get things put on you that you cannot handle."
The tennis champion is insistent that she is now "definitely on the other side. I've moved on. Right now I'm in a very good place. I am so happy". After the break-up she went to Miami and hung out with Serena Williams. She says she came back from that trip feeling "refreshed" and "felt a new self".
Despite travelling the world for her sport, Wozniacki says she does not have any difficulty balancing her career with her personal life.
"I think it is very important to have a life off the court. To me, it isn't so hard to balance," she said. While she is not in a relationship at the moment, she said: "I have met a few guys that are fun to hang around."
What does she look for in a guy?
"Someone who's honest, that's the most important thing; someone whose fun to be around and who doesn't take themselves too seriously." And yes she would like a "taller" boyfriend, having famously tweeted in the wake of the break-up that she could now wear high heels again.
During her time with McIlroy she tended to wear flat shoes because he was so small.
She concedes that "nobody is perfect" but "I have a long list. I'm pretty strict with my box ticking".
McIlroy (25) broke off the relationship just days after the couple had sent out invitations to their wedding. He blamed himself for the break-up and said he was just not ready for marriage to the Danish tennis star he had been dating for the previous two years.
"There is no right way to end a relationship that has been so important to two," he added.
"The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realise that I wasn't ready for all that marriage entails," he said.
