I didn't mean to insult Special Olympics - Gay

BELEAGUERED presidential candidate Gay Mitchell has insisted he did not intend to be disrespectful to the Special Olympics.

The Fine Gael candidate was criticising the fact the Government had failed to attract the Olympic games to Ireland, claiming that we did bring "some Olympics" here.

The remarks apparently infuriated Mr Mitchell's presidential rival Mary Davis. She said: "I felt it was an insult to the 30,000 volunteers and families that we brought to Ireland in that time."

A spokesperson for Mr Mitchell said the Dublin MEP meant no disrespect -- adding that he has a sister with a learning disability and that many of his family members volunteered with the Special Olympics.
