Former Glenroe actress Mary McEvoy has revealed she used to cry every morning before going to work on the RTE soap.

The well-known TV star (59) has said she used to have to fight her demons on a daily basis, despite being one of the stars of the biggest programmes of the 1980s.

The actress who played the wife of the late Mick Lally for 17 years on the soap, said she managed to find a way to cope thanks to converting to Buddhism.

"I had times, in the middle of Glenroe at the greatest height of the Glenroe thing, when everyone would have thought I had everything in my lap, I would literally go through the process of evolution in front of my altar every morning," she said.

"I would literally start sobbing, not on my knees, but prone and by the end of the time I was praying, I was then able to go about my day."

When asked by RTE Radio 1's John Murray why she cried every day, she said that she just experienced "desolation" but was greatly boosted by working on the soap.

She has just released her new book Ordinary Beauty.
