Hospital hit by third walkout

Electricians at a Dublin hospital were set to hold a one-day stoppage today as a dispute over outsourcing escalates.

Members of the Technical Engineering and Electrical Union were set to walk off the job at St James's Hospital, Dublin, after no agreement was reached at the Labour Relations Commission.

Union leaders confirmed emergency life and limb cover were to be provided during the industrial action but warned the technical services department would be affected.

This is the third stoppage by members at the hospital since the beginning of the month over claims management is reducing the role of electricians on site.

Driver killed by flash flood

At least one person was killed in flash flooding that hit central Slovakia following an unusually strong storm that lasted several hours and was accompanied by torrential rains.

The interior ministry said one man drowned in the town of Handlova as he was trying to save his car. Details were not given.

Interior minister Daniel Lipsic said another two people were missing.

Another MTV star arrested

Another MTV Jersey Shore cast member was arrested in the New Jersey town where the show is based.

Seaside Heights police said 24-year-old Ronald "Ronnie" Ortiz-Magro was taken into custody for outstanding warrants from two other Garden State communities. The warrants involve unpaid parking tickets.

Police said he was released a short time later "after satisfying the conditions of the warrants". The arrest comes about two weeks after fellow cast member Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.

Peru leader's marriage woes

Peruvian president Alan Garcia has said his marriage has seen better days.

The president told a newspaper that he and his wife Pilar Nores have a "distant relationship at the moment".

But the 61-year-old leader said he is not considering a divorce after more than 30 years of marriage and believes that "at some point we will be okay again".
