Holles Street boss backs bid to move

THE new Master of Holles Street anticipates that the hospital could move beside St Vincent's Hospital in Blackrock under her tenure.

Dr Rhona Mahony, the first female Master of any maternity hospital in the country, said that co-location of maternity hospitals with a specialist treatment centre is vital.

The facility sees 25 children born every day and the number of babies born is constantly on the increase.

The children's hospital plans for the Mater site have been turned down by An Bord Pleanala.

But the national maternity hospital is pressing ahead with plans to shift location.

"We have been working with Vincent's Hospital every year. Year on year it becomes increasingly urgent. We deliver mothers who have very complex underlying medical conditions that require a variety of skill sets, variety of specialists.

"There have been a variety of solutions looked at.

"Yes, absolutely, the real argument there centres around the co-location of a maternity hospital with an adult hospital."

Dr Mahony said that there have been numerous reports published which have clearly outlined why the location of two hospitals side by side is so important. "The infrastructure is not as we would like it to be.

"The maternity hospital should be relocated -- we will put every effort into making it happen," she added.
