Hedgehog sweeps up glory with new stamp

A yellow head, a moustachioed plumber, a hedgehog and a bunch of space invaders are the latest subjects to have stamps printed in their honour.

Video game icons Nintendo's Mario, Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog (inset), Bandai Namco Games Inc's Pac-Man and Taito Corp's Space Invaders feature on a colourful four-stamp set issued by An Post.

Iconic The set marks the iconic status of the games and transition of gaming from novelty to global industry.

In 1978, Space Invaders became one of the forerunners of modern video gaming. Two years later, Pac-Man first appeared and players began steering a yellow head around levels of a maze, gobbling up dots and fruit and avoiding ghosts.

Mario, created in 1981, began one of the biggest video game franchises of all time.

The distinctive blue Sonic the Hedgehog first appeared in 1991.

The stamps were designed by Zinc Design Consultants in Dublin.
