Heartbroken mother returns home to grieve for knife victim Avril

MURDER victim Avril Flanagan's heartbroken mum has returned to Ireland to grieve for her daughter.

Avril's former mechanic dad Gerry (52) and his son Ger (26) have remained in Spain to carry on running the bar they own in the popular expat resort of Cabo Roig near Alicante.

But mum Barbara (50) has moved temporarily back to Celbridge, Co Kildare where she is living with her youngest son David (23) and stays in touch with her husband by phone.

Avril, from Swords, was stabbed to death in a brutal attack at an ex-boyfriend's home in Cabo Roig on May 29 last year.

Liverpudlian Alan Daulby (24) was arrested within hours of the gruesome crime and is currently in jail prior to trial.

A family friend of the Flanagans said: "Barbara is still very upset by Avril's death. She's moved back to Ireland. She goes to Avril's grave every day to talk to her and lay flowers.

"Gerry's trying to cope by ploughing all his energies into his pub."

The couple will be reunited later this month when they return to St Colmcille's Church in Swords to commemorate what would have been Avril's 21st birthday.

A memorial mass is due to take place there on February 25 followed by a function afterwards for relatives and friends.

Daulby, thought to have dated Avril until a week before her death, has so far refused to talk to authorities.

He has been hauled to court four times by an investigating magistrate anxious to quiz him about the crime.

But he has retained his right to silence on each occasion.

He is expected to be formally charged with Avril's murder when the judicial investigation concludes later this year.

Avril was stabbed more than 40 times and had her jugular vein cut in the brutal attack which claimed her life.

Daulby, whose parents owned an apartment in Cabo Roig where her body was found, was arrested in the town of Oliva 100 miles north after a police chase.

Wellwishers are still leaving messages daily on a Facebook tribute site set up after Avril died.
