Heaney poem in One City project

A NEVER before seen Seamus Heaney poem has been published in this year's One City One Book.

The new four-line composition, entitled Dublin 4 was included after organisers asked Mr Heaney to contribute to the project when they noticed he wrote very little about Dublin.

Jane Alger the director of the Dublin City Libraries Unesco City of Literature programme, explained how the poem came to be included.

"The publishers were talking to him about his suggestions for the book and they were talking about how he didn't write that much about Dublin so they asked him what he'd like to submit," she said.

The book was launched at the Patrick Kavanagh bench on the canal bank and when Paula Meehan, the Ireland Chair of Poetry, opened the book as she sat beside Mr Kavanagh's statue it fell and opened on one of his poems.

Some of the other Irish poets included in the book are Theo Dorgan and Brendan Kennelly.
