Harbour parking fees still on cards

CONTROVERSIAL parking charges at Howth harbour are still under consideration.

Environment Minister Simon Coveney has been deliberating over bringing in fees for the past 11 months but no decision has yet been made. Earlier this year traders and stakeholders set up a website to detail their opposition to any proposals.

Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan slammed the idea as "crazy" and potentially devastating for Howth's marine and tourism business.

Despite indicating last January that pay and display fees would be introduced, the Minister this week said he has still not made a decision.

There are about 500 parking spaces in Howth village that the government has argued are being predominantly used by park-and-ride commuters.

Mr Coveney previously said: "The volumes of traffic currently parking at the harbour are creating significant health and safety risks."
