Guinness sales drop

THE black stuff appears to be losing its edge in Ireland as Diageo reported a 5pc drop in Guinness sales.

The drinks giant pointed out that the Irish beer market has contracted due to the weak economy.

But it said that the brand is gaining market share, according to last quarter results. The company, which makes Guinness, Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker Scotch whisky, said that organic sales rose 5pc to £11.4bn (€13.6bn) from £10.76bn (€12.2bn).
