Grenade uncovered at college

GARDAI were today probing the sinister discovery of a hand grenade at Clonliffe College in Dublin.

The Belgian M73 grenade with a metal body was found in a sock at the base of a tree near the Drumcondra Road entrance to the college on the north side of the city.

Sources said it may have been stashed there for delivery by a criminal gang but posed no immediate threat to the public.

Bomb disposal experts initially thought the sock contained a live grenade and it was rendered safe before being taken away for more detailed examination.

Gardai later described the device as an elaborate hoax. and said it had probably been left in the college for collection by a criminal gang.

Meanwhile, an Army bomb disposal team was called to a remote area in Co Donegal after the discovery of ammunition and bomb parts in a field.

The haul include 7.62mm ammunition for a Kalashnikov AK 47 assault rifle and is being linked to the Real IRA.
