Greece hit by strikes

GREECE is teetering on the edge as public service workers brought the country to a standstill with a general strike.

Schools, hospitals, airports and government offices all shut down as angry protesters, inset, flooded the streets yesterday and the protests were expected to continue throughout today.

The austerity programme has resulted in relentless wage cuts, tax increases, price rises and pension drops which has sent poverty levels soaring.

Meanwhile, Germany called on its EU partners to recapitalise the banking sector to help prevent the eurozone debt crisis spreading.
