Grandad injured in pub attack 'critical'

A Dundalk grandfather remains in a critical condition after an attack at a pub in the town.

Laurence McGeown is in intensive care at the Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital after suffering head injuries in the weekend assault.

Mr McGeown (62) is a barman himself but was drinking in a different pub while on time off when he was attacked last Friday.

Gardai believe he was punched in the face between 9pm and 9.30pm in Fagan's Pub on the Castletown Road in Dundalk.

UNCONSCIOUS

A friend drove him to hospital where he was treated by medics. It is not clear if Mr McGeown discharged himself or was discharged by the hospital, but he was back in his home later that night.

On Monday morning a taxi driver that regularly took Mr McGeown from his home at Oldbridge, Toberona, to work in Pa's Bar in Dundalk became concerned when he failed to meet his appointment.

He contacted Mr McGeown's daughter Lisa, who found him unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. He was taken to hospital where his condition today was described as critical.

Gardai have appealed for any witnesses to the attack on Mr McGeown, or anyone with information, to contact them.
