A €10m cycle track will be built in Dublin city centre.
Councillors at last night's city council meeting voted to give the go-ahead for the 4.6km track, which is made up of two routes.
The Grand Canal Premium Route will go from the Grand Canal and Forbes Street through to Rathmines Road and the new Samuel Beckett Bridge at City Quay.
A smaller Docklands Route will pass through the Samuel Beckett Bridge to Alfie Byrne Road.
The cycle track is to be built on a separate route from both roads and footpaths. But cyclists' groups said the paths, at 1.25m wide, would be too narrow
The construction also includes the removal of parking spaces beside the Grand and Royal Canal.
The project, due to be completed by the end of this year, will also involve the construction of four cycle and pedestrian bridges.
