Girl (19) attacked at front door of home and raped

The victim who is a local woman did not know her attacker but is understood to have told gardai that he was an Irish national.

"This kind of crime is very unusual in the Crumlin area – there has been very few of them recorded in that area in recent years," a source noted. "Gardai are determined to catch the perpetrator and anyone with information should come forward immediately."

While the investigation is being led by local officers, the Garda Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence unit are also involved.

CCTV is being studied and a major part of the investigation will be to determine if the rape is linked to any other previous sex crime.

In these type of cases, specialist gardai use a system called VICLAS, the Violent Crime Linkage Analysis System, a computer developed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the early 1990s to compare different crimes for similarities.

Sources say that VICLAS is "especially useful" for investigating random sexual assault or rape cases as it uses behavioural analysis, traditional lines of enquiry and geographical profiling.
