THE father of a teenage boy who went missing with a 12-year-old girl at the weekend has spoken of the families' relief after the pair were found safe and well.

Donnacha Ireland (15) from Killarney and Katie Mangan from Killorglin went missing from their homes in Kerry on Sunday and were seen boarding a train to Dublin.

They arrived at Heuston Station at 8.45pm that night.

Concerns grew steadily throughout yesterday as the youngsters failed to return home - despite a number of reported sightings in the capital - but they were finally located at approximately 1am this morning.

"They don't seem any the worse for wear at all," Andy Ireland told RTE's Morning Ireland this morning.

"I'd say our nerves are completely shredded."

Mr Ireland said that dozens of family and friends had been involved in the search in Dublin yesterday, but without much luck before night fell. The search group was still "walking the streets" when they got the news they were hoping for.

"Then we got a phonecall to say that not only had they been spotted, they were safe and in the process of making their way home," he said.

Mr Ireland said there was no specific reason why they had disappeared.

"It seem they'd just gone for ... I wouldn't say a laugh... but they felt the need to go and free themselves... just to be there... just to go," he added.

And he admitted he wasn't able to express his relief when he finally found them.

"I don't think I had the words to be honest," he said, becoming emotional.
