Gastric band doctor bid fails

A HUNGARIAN doctor found guilty of professional misconduct and poor professional performance by the Medical Council has had his appeal struck out by the High Court.

Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns also confirmed the decision of the Medical Council in relation to Dr Laszlo Ruscsakk over the care of a woman who underwent a gastric band procedure in Hungary.

The inquiry found that Dr Ruscsakk, a former director of Haven Cosmetic Surgery in Stillorgan, Dublin, did not provide Lucia Dowd from Lucan, Co Dublin, with a psychological review or counselling before the gastric band procedure in October 2009.

Fat City actress dies aged 67

OSCAR-nominated actress Susan Tyrrell, known for roles in offbeat films including John Waters' Cry-Baby, has died. She was 67.

Her niece Amy Sweet said Tyrrell died on Saturday in her sleep at home in Texas.

Tyrrell received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her role as barfly Oma in John Huston's 1972 boxing movie Fat City. She appeared in more than 75 movies and TV shows.

Boy (14) on assault charge

A 14-YEAR-OLD boy charged over a suspected racially motivated attack on a Pakistani national in Dublin has been given an extra week before he has to enter a plea.

The boy had been charged at the Dublin Children's Court in April along with two other youths with possessing a metal pole as a weapon and assault causing harm.

He was aged 13 when he allegedly took part in the assault at the South Circular Road, on June 17 last year.

Yesterday Judge Ann Ryan remanded the boy on continuing bail in his absence to appear again on June 27.

Putin - Syrians must choose

RUSSIAN President Vladimir Putin has said only the Syrian people have the right to decide whether Bashar Assad steps down.

Speaking at the G20 summit in Mexico, Putin confirmed the joint US-Russia statement from Monday.

Putin and US President Barack Obama agreed that Syrians should choose their next government -- a subtle shift for both nations.
