THREE telescopic rifles and a loaded handgun have been seized by gardai in the biggest weapons haul of the year.
The activities of a major south Dublin cocaine trafficking gang have been dealt a serious blow following the bust.
Three high-spec rifles with telescopic sights, a handgun loaded with six bullets, an unloaded hand revolver, two sawn-off shotguns and 60 shotgun cartridges were found during the raid.
The discovery of the weapons and ammo in Tallaght on Monday night is being considered as "very significant".
In a separate operation, gardai seized €750,000 worth of cannabis after they searched a van on Victoria Quay in the city.
The guns were found during a raid on a house in west Tallaght. A man and a woman were arrested.
The man, in his 20s, was the primary target of the operation which was led by the Organised Crime Unit.
No drugs were discovered and gardai sources say that investigations are ongoing.
The raid arose from an ongoing operating targeting the activities of a Crumlin/Tallaght cocaine trafficking gang.
"This outfit is one of the biggest cocaine gangs operating in the capital at present.
"The weapons seized are serious kit and it is very disturbing that weapons of this calibre are on the streets," said the source.
