Gardai hunt Englishman over body in river probe

GARDAI are desperately searching for a missing Englishman who they believe may have information about the savage murder of a father of one.

Jonathan Duke (27) suffered a serious assault before being dumped into the River Bandon in west Cork last Sunday night.

The Herald has learned that gardai are trying to trace an English national who lived near Mr Duke in Bandon, Co Cork, and whose safety they are now increasingly concerned over.

The man lived in the bottom-floor flat in Bridge House where Mr Duke also resided -- and gardai want to know if he saw or heard anything suspicious last weekend.

"We don't know if he took off over what happened on Sunday night or whether there might be another reason. We would like to locate his whereabouts," Supt Eddie McKeown said.

Gardai have appealed for anyone who was near Bandon bridge from 6pm on Sunday to contact them at (023) 8852200.
