Garda who plunged to HIS death in fishing tragedy

THIS is the garda who plunged to his death as his six-year-old son watched in horror.

Garda Adrian Martin (46) from Carrickmacross, Co Monaghan, had taken his son on a fishing trip to Kilkee, Co Clare, around lunchtime yesterday.

It is understood his fishing line got caught in the cliff, and, as he tried to unravel it, he slipped to his death.

Eye-witnesses have told how it could have been a double tragedy.

Garda Martin's son is reported to have walked towards the edge of the cliff to look for his father but was pulled back by other fishermen. An angler who was just yards away, rushed to the young boy's side and alerted the emergency services.

Local rescue teams recovered the victim's body from the sea some time after 2pm. His wife Helen, who was staying at a nearby apartment, was called to identify her husband's body.

Meanwhile, Joseph Orwill (17) from Santry in Dublin should be starting his Leaving Cert year at school next week -- but instead family members will be gathering for his funeral.
