A young man has died after being shot while playing with a gun at his Dublin home.
The 21-year-old was "playing around" with two friends when he was shot accidentally, it is understood.
The victim died at 4am today after sustaining fatal wounds at a house in Fortlawn Park, Clonsilla, West Dublin.
Gardai believe that the man was shot after he and two others were playing around with a legally held shotgun.
Sources have ruled out any gangland motive in the tragic death.
The Herald understands that the initial report received by emergency services was that an accidental discharge of a firearm had taken place at the house.
The incident happened at 3.57am today.
Two men, a 23-year-old and an 18-year-old, were arrested a short time later and were being questioned about the shooting.
Sources close to the investigation said a call had been made to the emergency services at 3.57am, saying that there had been an accidental shooting.
The caller said that the dead youth had been "playing with a gun".
The call was not made from Fortlawn Park itself, but from another location.
Two men, a 23-year-old and an 18-year-old, were arrested a short time later and they were being held at Finglas Garda Station.
While gardai have not confirmed what line their investigation is taking, they have said the killing was not gang-related.
One source said it appears the three men "were in the house together" and there was "some messing with a gun".
"People did not arrive to kill a person," the Herald was informed.
Superintendent Dave Dowling from Blanchardstown station said it was "early days", and that a conference on the incident was taking place this morning.
Baffled neighbours said they knew nothing about what had happened and were shocked to be woken to the sight of blue flashing lights outside.
"We didn't hear any shots or
anything, we just woke up to lights and commotion, and when we went up to the house to see what was going on the gardai told us to move back," one neighbour said.
The house at 101 Fortlawn Park was sealed off by gardai pending a forensic examination by members of the garda technical bureau.
The dead youth's body remained inside the house pending the arrival of the State pathologist.
The front door remained open, with lights on inside.
A garda spokesman said: "Gardai in Blanchardstown are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal shooting which occurred at a house in Fortlawn Park, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15, at approximately 4am.
"A 21-year-old man received fatal injuries following the shooting. His body remains at the scene, pending a garda technical examination and the arrival of the State pathologist.
"Two men, aged 18 and 23 years, have been arrested in connection with this incident and are currently being detained at Finglas Garda Station under Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act.
"Investigations are ongoing."
