Garda loses bid to quash probe

A GARDA sergeant has lost his High Court bid aimed at quashing an investigation into allegations he harassed a man over a four-year period.

Sergeant Oliver Moran, of Kilmacrennan Station, Co Donegal, challenged the Garda Ombudsman Commission's decision to carry out the investigation into the complaint from Josie Kelly, from Creeslough in Donegal, that he was harassed between 2003 and 2007.

He claimed the Ombudsman had no power to extend a six month time limit for completion of the investigation.

Yesterday Mr Justice John Hedigan ruled in favour of the Ombudsman.

E.coli is found in beet sprouts

Dutch authorities have recalled red beet sprouts after samples were found to be contaminated with a strain of E.coli bacteria that was apparently less dangerous than the one causing Europe's deadly E. coli crisis.

German health officials, meanwhile, reported that three more people died of the ailment yesterday, raising the toll to 29 in less than six weeks. The cause of that outbreak has so far eluded German investigators.

Teen attacked security guard

A TEENAGER attacked a shop security guard and claimed he could not be arrested because he had Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, a court has heard.

The 16-year-old boy, who felt that he was unfairly placed under surveillance in the west Dublin shop, pleaded guilty at the Children's Court to assault causing harm to the man on July 2 last year.

The teen threatened to have the security guards and staff shot and told them "he had ADHD and gardai wouldn't be able to do anything".

The case was adjourned until a date next month.

Christie Brinkley is heading to London's West End to star as Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago.

The 57-year-old supermodel -- who inspired her then husband Billy Joel's 1983 hit Uptown Girl -- made her Broadway debut in the role earlier this year.

She will transfer to the London stage on July 11 for a four-week run.
