Garda knocked down by driver

A Garda sustained minor injuries when she was knocked down by a suspected drunk driver.

The incident happened in the Ballymacool estate, in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, at 3pm after gardai responded to a report of alleged drunk driving yesterday.

The garda stepped out on to the road and signalled the driver to stop but he failed to do so and she was knocked down.

She was treated in hospital for hand injuries. The driver was arrested at the scene and charged with drink driving and dangerous driving.

Suspect held

in death probe

A 23-year-old man was set to appear in court today following the death of a former soldier on New Year's Eve.

He was arrested by gardai investigating the death of Noel Keegan (59), who was assaulted as he walked to a pub in Longford at 9pm on December 31.

Mr Keegan, who worked as a security guard and had a heart complaint, died at Midlands Regional Hospital in Mullingar hours later.

Video shows student killing

The killing of a Chicago high school student has been captured on videotape.

Surveillance video shows 16-year-old Fred Couch being shot outside a convenience store on the city's South Side.

Police, who are examining the video, say no arrests have yet been made.

Couch was a student at Christian Fenger Academy High School.

In September, the beating death of Derrion Albert, an honour student at Fenger, was captured by a cell phone video camera.

Couch's father was shot dead in 1993.

Storm damage to LE Roisin

A NAVAL ship was damaged in stormy weather off the west coast. The LE Roisin docked in Galway port on New Year's Eve after "minor damage" to the bow flare on the ship.

A Defence Forces spokesman said the vessel will now travel to the Naval Base at Haulbowline, Co Cork, for repairs over the next few days. No one was injured in the incident.
