A garda has undergone facial surgery after he and a colleague were assaulted by a gang of youths while on routine patrol.

The incident happened at approximately 5pm on Landen Road, Ballyfermot, on Tuesday evening.

The gardai approached a group of youths on a scrambler motorbike, but were subsequently attacked by them.

Scramblers being run on the roads of housing estates and green spaces in Ballyfermot have been causing ongoing local nuisance and safety issues.

Both male gardai were rushed to St James’s Hospital following the incident.

One of the officers was released yesterday afternoon after treatment for a broken nose, while the second officer underwent surgery to his face last night to treat a broken jaw.

Officers from Ballyfermot Garda Station are investigating the incident, and no arrests have yet been made.

Local Councillor Daithi de Roiste described the incident as “unacceptable”, adding that “no member of the gardai should come under attack while carrying out their job.”

The latest attack comes after a number of gardai were injured, some seriously, in the space of days.

Last Saturday a detective had his hip shattered when he was  allegedly run over by a stolen car in Balbriggan.

Two people are currently facing charges in relation to the incident.

And on August 28 a garda received an injury to his hand after an alleged ramming of a squad car in the Glasnevin area of Dublin.

Two men were later arrested in Ashbourne, Co Meath and charged in relation to the matter.
