A garda superintendent, who was arrested by colleagues probing alleged leaks to the media and who had his detention period extended by 12 hours last night, has been released from custody.
He was arrested yesterday and questioned in Balbriggan Garda Station until this morning on suspicion of breaching the Garda Siochana Act. The officer, in his early 50s, is one of the most senior members ever to be detained.
The investigation is being led by Chief Supt Frank Clerkin and Det Supt Jim McGowan.
Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan established the probe last July following a report by former Children's Ombudsman Emily Logan into the removal by gardai of two Roma children from their families in Athlone and Tallaght in October 2013.
The report found that while the HSE could not be ruled out as a source of the information that was leaked, the release of details in relation to one of the minors may have come from someone in the gardai.
