Garda appeal after cyclist (62) killed in hit-and-run at busy Clontarf junction

A Dublin man in his 60s has been killed after being knocked off his bicycle in a hit-and-run in the city.
The victim was named locally as Eugene Maher (62) from Griffith Downs in Whitehall.
He is believed to have been involved with the nearby Home Farm football club.
Mr Maher was cycling on the Clontarf Road when he was hit by a car at the junction of the Howth Road at around 6.30pm yesterday.
Witnesses described the car as being a silver-coloured VW Golf.
The car failed to stop at the scene, leaving Mr Maher fatally injured in the middle of the junction.
The emergency services were contacted and Mr Maher was rushed to Beaumont Hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardai later recovered a silver-coloured VW Golf with a 05D registration plate a short distance away at Croydon Park in Marino.
This car is today being forensically examined by members of the garda technical bureau to see if it was the one involved in the collision.
The car did not appear to have been reported stolen and gardai are hopeful of a breakthrough in the case in the coming days.
However, they have appealed for any witnesses to come forward to help them try to piece together the sequence of events surrounding the crash.
Investigating gardai are appealing to the driver of the car to contact them.
They are also appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision, or who observed 05 D registered silver Volkswagen Golf in the vicinity of Fairview, or the Clontarf Road and Marino area between 6.15pm-6.45pm to contact them.
The scene was also examined by garda forensic collision investigators and the road has since reopened to traffic.
Chalk marks left by collision investigators could be seen in the hatched yellow box area of the very busy junction today.
A post-mortem examination was due to take place on Mr Maher's body today.
