Gardai investigating the gangland murder of dissident republican Vincent 'Vinnie' Ryan have raided the home of a notorious mobster as part of their investigation.

However, when a large team of armed detectives searched the Ballymun property on Friday afternoon, the suspect was nowhere to be seen.

It is believed the volatile 30-year-old, who is facing charges before the courts, has fled the country.

The thug, who is suspected of having "key knowledge" of Ryan's murder, is a close associate of the New INLA criminal linked to three killings in the capital's bloody feud.

It is understood gardai seized documents and a powder substance from the man's home.

There have been regular armed garda checkpoints close to the suspect's home in recent weeks as gang tensions in north Dublin continue to increase.

A massive investigation into the murder of Ryan (25) is continuing, and five people have been arrested in relation to his death.

Ryan, a younger brother of murdered Real IRA chief Alan Ryan, was shot dead last February 29 as he ate a roll outside his girlfriend's home on McKee Road, Finglas.

Gardai believe his death was ordered by the Mr Big drugs gang - the same mob who shot Alan Ryan dead in September 2012.

In October 2013, Vinnie Ryan and his pal Darragh Evans (25) were cleared by the Special Criminal Court of firearms charges at Clonshaugh Walk, Coolock, on September 15, 2011 - the same day on which drugs trafficker Michael Kelly was shot dead.

Ryan was subjected to a horrific knife last October in front of his then pregnant 24-year-old partner who was walking with him at Parnell Square North.

The two-man hit team involved in Ryan's murder travelled from Finglas to the Victoria Bridge area in Co Kildare where they burnt out their Grey VW Golf getaway car.
