Gardai have identified a GAA star as the chief suspect in a vicious assault that left a county footballer requiring extensive hospital treatment.
Wicklow footballer Daniel Wood was attacked in Bray, Co Wicklow, last weekend and a senior source described the incident as "a brutal unprovoked attack".
The assault happened at Strand Road in the seaside town in the early hours of last Sunday with the streets packed with nightclub revellers.
Mr Wood suffered a double fracture to his jaw.
"We know where we are going with this one – gardai believe that a lot of people witnessed the incident.
"CCTV is being studied and there may be developments in the investigation shortly," the source said.
"The victim is expected to make a full recovery but he was very lucky – this could have been much worse."
A garda spokesman said: "The assailant is described as being 6ft 5in tall with brown hair and wearing a pale blue and white striped T-shirt."
