GAA star (24) killed in Australia truck horror

A PROMISING GAA star killed in a car crash in Australia was called up to his county's senior squad last year.

Tomas Maguire (24), from Ardara, Co Donegal, died at the scene of a single-vehicle crash 200km south of Perth on Monday.

He had been on his way to buy supplies for the farm where he worked when his pick-up truck rolled over.

Ambulance crews said the sportsman, a member of Ardara GAA club, died at the scene. In January, Mr Maguire's cousin Martina (16) died from leukemia.

Tomas was the son of Eunan and Eileen Maguire, a well-known Donegal family. His mother's family, the Egans, ran the post office in Ardara for decades.

Mr Maguire had been working on the Australian farm as part of the requirements of his working visa in the country.

His parents have been speaking to Irish diplomatic staff in Canberra and are making arrangement to fly to Perth.

Meanwhile police in Barcelona are investigating the death of a young Irishman.

It is understood Mark Ferguson (24) from Rathkip, Ballina, Co Mayo died after a fall from a balcony. He had travelled to Barcelona with friends for a music festival at the weekend.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is in contact with the family.
