Foreign troops pass Irish course with flying colours

AMERICAN, German and Maltese students have graduated from the army's toughest staff course.

The officers from foreign armies added an international dimension to the 67th Senior Command and Staff Course.

In all, 21 Irish and foreign officers graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Leadership Management and Defence Studies (MA LMDS) from NUI Maynooth yesterday.

The course involved students from the army, Naval Service and Air Corps, as well as the international students. The Senior C&S course is necessary for promotion in the Defence Forces beyond the rank of commandant.

The nine-month course is held in the Command and Staff School of the Military College in the Defence Forces Training Centre at the Curragh and is seen as a key component in the professional development of officers.

"This mix of military culture enhances co-operation, understanding and mutual respect which are vital in modern military operations," the Defence Forces said.
