DISCOUNT supermarket group Iceland has identifying a number of sites suitable for expansion in towns across the country as it plans to bring 1,000 jobs online.

It's understood that locations in Clonmel, Athlone, Cork, Waterford and Carlow have been selected as potential sites for the initial phase of expansion.

The group expects to spend between €35m and €50m opening 40 Iceland outlets here by 2014.

The owner, Dublin-based AIM retail group, said it has been seeking sites beside existing multiples or convenience stores in order to capitalise on the Iceland model.
