Five major Dublin hospitals have performed poorly in an assessment just published by the Health Services Executive.
The Mater, Connolly, St Columcille's, Beaumont and Tallaght hospitals have all been deemed to have "room for improvement" in services.
Only St Vincent's and St James's hospitals were considered by the HSE to have "very good performance".
Beaumont Hospital was singled out as needing to pay urgent attention to making its services more "patient-centred" by admitting people on the day of their procedure, informing patients and their families of the treatment plan and discharging them at the proper time.
Outpatients at Beaumont can expect to wait more than nine months for an appointment with an ear, nose and throat consultant, more than six months to see a medical consultant, and more than five months to see a surgeon.
The October assessment also shows outpatients at Connolly Hospital have to wait an average of just under five months to see a consultant -- the corresponding times are more than three months at the Mater, just under three months at Tallaght and St James's hospitals, and just over one month at St Vincent's.
The average wait to see a consultant surgeon is more than five months at Tallaght, more than four at Beaumont, more than three at St James's, just under three months at Connolly, two months at the Mater and a month at St Vincent's.
Patients looking for an ear, nose and throat consultant appointment have to wait 10 months at Tallaght, nine months at the Mater, just under five months at Connolly, just over three months at St Vincent's and just under two months at St James's.
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda has the longest wait of all for an ear, nose and throat appointment at four years followed by Galway University hospital at three years and Waterford hospital at just under 18 months.
