Firms victims of crime

More pay-cuts and falling employment have caused an increase in company crime in Ireland in 2009, as 40pc of firms surveyed said that they were victims of crime within the last year.

A third of respondents said criminals have been employing new techniques in the past year, with internet crime and identity theft taking place in addition to traditional forms of crime.

The survey, carried out by protection company Netwatch, found that rural properties, vacant construction sites, elderly people, business owners and their families are increasingly seen as vulnerable to criminal targeting.
