GARDAI ordered staff at Fine Gael's Ard Fheis to close the blinds in the National Convention Centre to stop delegates riling already angry protesters.
As thousands marched on the venue, officers feared that curious Fine Gael guests were stoking the fury.
While the chanting masses roared outside the NAMA-controlled conference centre, those inside were steadfast in their views that the household charge was a necessary evil.
Justice Minister Alan Shatter didn't help matters on Friday night by suggesting that protesters should "get a life".
Gardai called time on the 'stare off' between Fine Gael members and the crowds by asking staff to close shutters.
"There were some who appeared to be goading the crowds. One man waved two ¤50 notes," said a source.
