FG surprise as Yore bows out of politics

SHE was arguably Fine Gael's most glamorous candidate in the last general election, but now Catherine Yore is prematurely retiring from politics.

The councillor and former RTE You're A Star talent show contestant has announced she will not be running in next year's local elections.

A member of Meath County Council, the 28-year-old gave no reason for her decision.

The politician revealed last year that she suffered debilitating migraines that leave her numb and vomiting. It was so bad that all she could do to relieve the pain was go into a dark room and lie down.

Ms Yore, a teacher based in Kells, ran in the Meath West constituency in the 2011 general election.

Although her running mates Damien English and Ray Butler won seats, she failed to get elected.

She came to prominence during the 2009 local elections when she was pictured in a black mini-dress beside Enda Kenny.

During the election, she was photographed in an array of stylish outfits and developed something of a high profile.

Her decision to stand down next year surprised colleagues.

"She didn't give any explanation apart from time pressures. She didn't tell anyone beforehand," a party source said.

Ms Yore was unavailable for comment yesterday.
