GARDAI fear a young man found dead in his rented Cork house was the victim of a brutal beating.

Supt Pat McCarthy appealed for public assistance in tracing the last known movements of Peter Murphy (36).

Gardai also appealed for anyone who may have spotted suspicious activity in the Bweeng, Shanavoher or Castletownroche areas of north Cork in the 72 hours up to Saturday afternoon to contact them.

Mr Murphy was discovered dead at his rented property at Shanavoher in north Cork on Saturday evening.

The young man was originally from Shinnick Place in Castletownroche, Co Cork.

A garda investigation was launched after a post-mortem examination found he had injuries which were not consistent with a fall.

A decision on upgrading the garda investigation was to be taken after a case conference at Mallow Garda Station last night.

One of the theories is that Mr Murphy may have been targeted over an outstanding debt.

His family declined to comment to the Herald.

"We have nothing to say. We are asking for our privacy to please be respected," a family spokesman said.

However, another relative admitted that the entire family was devastated by the tragedy.

"Peter was in Castletownroche just last Wednesday. No-one knows what happened after that. His parents, brothers and sister are absolutely heartbroken by this," he said.

A post-mortem examination carried out by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster at Cork University Hospital (CUH) found Mr Murphy died from internal injuries.

He was found lying face-down in the sitting room of his home after a neighbour became concerned over damage to an outside window on Saturday and alerted the landlord.

The man called to check the house and immediately alerted gardai and paramedics when he spotted the young man lying on the floor.

His last contact with his family was a telephone call made on Thursday afternoon.
