Fears for 'risky' banks

THE EUROPEAN Central Bank has outlined that although banks in the eurozone are becoming safer in the wake of the financial crisis, rising funding costs could prompt some banks to turn to risky practices to boost profits.

The sector's return on equity turned positive in 2009, the ECB said. However, it warns "rising funding costs may also encourage risk-taking behaviour by banks seeking to restore profitability".
