Father sold heroin to support his children

A DAD of two claimed he sold heroin to "make a few extra pounds for his family".

Darren Mooney (31) said he was in financial difficulties and he was selling the heroin in small deals of €20 or €30.

A court heard that Mooney had a drug problem, but was stabilised on methadone, and had been providing clean tests.

The defendant, of Fortunestown Crescent, Tallaght, previously admitted before Tallaght District Court to simple possession of heroin and having the drug for sale or supply.

The incident took place at Deerpark Avenue in Tallaght on August 14 last year. The value of the drugs was €300.

Defence solicitor Grainne Malone urged a judge not to imprison Mooney, saying he was co-operative with gardai.

She said the amount of heroin he was selling was small.

Judge James McDonnell fined Mooney €1,500 and sentenced him to 11 months in prison suspended for two years.
